Review – Little Shop of Horrors @Solstice Arts Centre Navan
Honestly, my first thought as I sit down to write this is why, oh why, have I never seen this hilarious musical before??? Seriously, if you haven’t seen a production of Little Shop of Horrors then you really must get yourself a ticket sharpish. Quirky and silly, with big musical numbers that make you want to hop on stage to join the chorus, it’s a great night out
Generally I’m pretty critical when it comes to theatre. I believe it’s very difficult to correctly cast and direct a play so it translates well to an audience, there are a lot of lines to learn and people to coordinate and no ‘do-overs’ if something goes wrong on stage. It’s probably thanks to my previous forays into amateur dramatics that I’m so aware of how one badly played character or one poorly choreographed dance number can drag a whole production down but this was one of the best theatre group productions of a musical I’ve seen in a long time. The St Mary’s Musical Society cast were on point in every number, the choreography was practically flawless and the way the character of Audrey 2 was played was spot on. She had a huge personality in spite of not even having eyes to utilise in facial expressions!
