Vodafone Comedy Festival – I spy with my little eye…
…some Irish comedians that RTE have shared with the world! Yup, you’ve guessed it, this post is dedicated to some of our homegrown talent who have appeared on our tellybox in one form or another. So if you want to see them performing live stand-up the Vodafone Comedy Festival (Thurs26th- Sun29th July) is the ideal opportunity to catch them without a character to hide behind.
Aprés Match star Barry Murphy is described by Hotpress as “one of the High Kings of Irish comedy”. He has an original perspective on life which he has poured into his many successful tv projects including ‘Couched’ and ‘Soupie Norman’ but over the course of the festival he will be performing his unique brand of stand-up in 2shows; Friday 27th @7.30pm (Cherry Top) and Sat 28th @4.30pm (Joke Shop).
Dave Mc Savage is known for the cutting comedic commentary on Irish life he brings to life with the help of his characters in tv show, The Savage Eye. Wickedly funny Dave is one of Ireland’s most popular comedians and you can see him perform for yourself on Thurs 26th @7.30pm (Big Red) and on Fri 27th @9.30pm (Joke Shop).
Another Savage Eye writer will be taking to the stage in the form of Dermot Mc Morrow. Dermot is a unique act who will be answering unusual questions like ‘Do you ever wonder where seagulls go at night?’ as part of his set when he joins Dave Mc Savage and company on Fri 27th @9.30pm (Joke Shop)
John Colleary is a familiar face on the stand-up comedy scene but he is most recognisable as another of the stars of The Savage Eye. He will be joining his Savage Eye cohorts on Fri 27th @ 9.30pm (Joke Shop) but if you miss him then you can see him perform his set anew on Sat 28th @10pm (Cherry Top)

The 2nd Republic – a boost for Irish Comedy?
I posted a while ago about a new RTE radio comedy radio show looking for audience members in order to record a live show in front of an audience. The show is presented by Neil Delamare who has previous panel show type experience from his time on the Panel on RTE 2. I took a listen to the first radio show online.
The show involves Neil, Chris Kent, and different special guests each week, in the first episode PJ Gallagher and Marty Whelan took part, building and creating a new republic (the 2nd republic) In order to do this we need a new constitution which means new laws. These involve having to sit an exam to get a TV license (from Chris) which was passed by the new Government and a tax on Holy Communion money (from PJ) also passed. Seeing a trend here? Seems pretty easy to get laws passed by this new Government eh?
The second part of the show is called ‘Off with their heads’ in which each of the Founding Fathers nominate a person (or in PJ’s case an animal?) to get a round of applause or their head chopped off. Seems a bit extreme no? Special guest also included Kevin Lockard on the American technology V’s Irish technology followed on by a discussion involving all the panellists.
The show is very funny and at times I found myself laughing out loud. Neil does a good job at presenter of the show and is a natural presenter and leader. That together with some of Ireland’s greatest comedians it is a recipe for success. I really enjoyed the first show and am I am looking forward to seeing what comes next. I kinda want the 2nd Republic to take over as the leaders of our country…..especially considering as it’s so easy to get laws passed! If you would like to be part of the audience for the show, you need to be out RTE for 6.30 today and every Thursday of the week of recording so….get your skates on!
You can take a listen to the first episode here. 2nd republic is definitely a boost for Irish Comedy; why not support this new edition to the comedy scene?
Randomania :)
