Review – The Distraction Club @The Phoenix (London)

You all know I was in London recently and while I was there it just so happened that the monthly ‘Distraction Club’ event was taking place in The Phoenix bar. For those of you who haven’t heard of The Distraction Club it is a monthly event dedicated to the often misunderstood but increasingly popular art form that is musical comedy. I love to see quality acts who are able to blend playing an instrument with hilarious gags so it was with eager anticipation that I entered the venue.

The stage is set…

Taking place in the basement restaurant of The Phoenix the atmosphere in the room reflected my own enthusiasm for the night ahead and it was immediately apparent that this was a monthly outing for many of the audience members. The room was full of chatting and banter, the wait staff were kept very busy serving not just drinks but food as well (it smelled delicious and the menu was extensive and reasonably priced so it didn’t surprise me to see so many of the crowd having a meal along with their comedy). And by the time The Distractions took to the stage to kick-start the event everyone was in high spirits, ready to be entertained!

Silky & The Distractions

Disappointingly we weren’t treated to an appearance from Mitch Benn the well-known musical satirist as the usual Distractions front man was otherwise engaged, but his replacement Silky easily filled his shoes and the crowd laughed abundantly at all the prepared songs he brought to the stage over the course of the evening. Silky’s ‘real life version’ of the well-known match.com advert songs was one of the many high points of the night,  and in true Distraction Club tradition he even created an impressive, if a little nonsensical, improv piece later in the evening based on the audience suggestions of Arctic Terns, HotWheels and breasts (we had a mixed crowd obviously!).

The fun didn’t stop there and the plethora of musical comedy acts who took to the stage included Spencer Brown,  ‘Figsy’, The Segue Sisters, Rob Carter, Matt Blair, Christian Reilly and headliner Desmond O’Connor. Each of the acts successfully managed to elicit laughter from the crowd though some were certainly better received by the crowd than others.
