Comedy: My Favourites

As this will be my last blog I decided to gather together some of my favourite comedy videos into one post. In no particular order here they are.

First up, some improv from the Princes of Lagos……their command of accents is awesome!

Next, Foil Arms and Hog. It’s an old one but I love these guys!

Anyone that can rap about tea is a good un in my book….step in Doc Brown!

Event – Latitude Festival July 12th – 15th @ Suffolk

Feel like heading to a festival a bit further afield this summer? Well The Latitude festival comes to Hemham Park, Southwold, Sunrise Coast, Suffolk from July 12th – 15th. This year is it’s 7th year. Among the extensive line up including theatre, cabaret, poetry and film and music, there is of course a comedy arena!

Over the weekend, some notable comedians entertaining the crowds at Latitude include Tim Minchin, David O’Doherty, Jack Dee. Doc Brown, Phil Jupitus, Reginal D Hunter, Josh Widdicombe and Tony Law and many others.

The Latitude festival is fun for all the family with Pandora’s playground and the Children’s Arena catering for the little ones and the Inbetweener Teen area catering for the teenagers in the family. Pretty much everyone sorted then!

Highlights from the Cat Laughs Festival

After a week of all things Kilkenny Cat Laughs, I decided it was about time I did a highlights type blog. As this was my first time at the festival, there were some high points and also some low points! Obviously one of the low points was the weather! Typically it rained for all the weekend, but thankfully we were clever about the shows we went to see and didn’t have that much of a walk in between venues!  Kilkenny isn’t that pretty when it rains! :)

The act that goes down as my Kilkenny love is Doc Brown. For those of you that don’t know Doc, firstly shame on you! Secondly I have included a YouTube video for your enjoyment. I caught Doc on Saturday night at the Catapalooza music extravaganza. And I’m just gonna say it; damn the boy’s got talent! Anyone that can make a rap out of making a cup of tea gets respect in my opinion!

He definitely made up for some of the other acts who kinda let me down I must admit. Kilkenny is a myriad of comedians all competing to get your attention by bringing their A game. In some cases, they fell just short of that for me.

Another love of Kilkenny would be Josh Widdicombe; Josh hates his Iphone, doesn’t want to grass up Microsoft programmes and describes Peter Pan as the “man in green”. Come on, what’s not to love?

Kilkenny is quite a random city, looking around the city you can’t help but notice the kilt wearing men, or more random still the guy wearing the belly top and the shortest shorts I have ever seen in my life (I was even treated to a peek under the shorts on his way to the loo!) Though in both cases they really should have put more thought in to the shoe choices!

I couldn’t have a highlights blog without mentioning the football match! Granted I saw most of it from the comfort of a car, it doesn’t matter right! I still watched a full football match! It was good fun and we got some good shots! (I’ve even included some for you!)

Kung Fu Football!

So there's the goal, all ye need to do is score right?

The Cat Laughs was a great experience. 4 gigs, 19 comedians, a football match, and a trip to the cinema….all in the space of 26 hours! Roll on next year!

Review – Catapalooza @The Cat Laughs

It’s no secret that I’m a musical comedy fan, so when I heard the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny was putting on their first gig exclusively dedicated to musical comedy I had to stop on by and check it out! Taking place at midnight in the Ormonde Hotel’s Kings Ballroom, this was the first ‘stand-up’ gig I’d been too where it wasn’t just the comedians on stage who were chairless! Unfortunately this casual pre-nightclub style format wasn’t at all conducive to the gig running smoothly.

The MC for the evening was Fred Cooke. Fred is generally a very entertaining comedian who is no stranger to musical comedy, but he really struggled to connect with the crowd on the night who paid little or no attention to his requests for people to listen to the acts on stage. His attempt at melodica requests, which is a part of Fred’s repertoire I’m actually a big fan of, fell flat on its face because the audience weren’t involved enough with him as an act and Fred seemed to really battle to keep his focus while on stage. It was definitely not the quality of performance you expect from a comedian with as much experience and funny material up his sleeves as Fred has.

The first act on stage was Joe Rooney whose set involved performing some of the best musical impressions I’ve heard! Joe managed to get a decent group of audience members fully enthralled with his impressive guitar playing and there were plenty of laughs to be heard during his time on stage. I particularly enjoyed Joe’s impression of Bono (he has the body language and gestures spot on!) and the section on famous people he’d like to have as fathers had the crowd in stitches.

We all need a bit of Randomania in our lives right?

So it’s Friday again already! Wohoo! After a busy weekend at the Cat Laughs comedy festival in Kilkenny, we are looking forward to a bit of a quiet weekend here at the Comedy Scoop :) Now for a collection of random stuff that has made us giggle or literally laugh out loud this week.

First up is my favourite from the Cat Laughs festival, Doc Browne. Doc was in one word….amazing! He pretty much made going to Kilkenny and braving the elements worthwhile for me…. Take a look at the video and you will see why ;)

Micheál Murphy is confused about Club Oranges latest advertising campaign on twitter this week…..

Er… Why? http://twitpic.com/9u36rm

@MickyMurphy22

There are a lot of football pictures floating around Facebook and Twitter this week with Euro 2012 starting tonight, here are two of the funniest I could find……

Hmm I think they may be getting caught....?

Emm.......

Tara Flynn may have the wrong idea about the football too…..

Frankly, I thought the Eurovision was weeks ago. #euro12 But seems it’s now, & there are tons of boybands.

@TaraFlynn

This week I got the chance to go to an improv gig featuring the wonderful John Cremer from the Maydays. It was great craic and I had a really good laugh. Here is a short clip from them to show what you’re missing if you have never been a gig! :)

And finally I couldnt finish off Randomania today without some reference to something football related could I? So here is an Apres Match clip……leave it to the best eh?

Until next week, enjoy your weekend whatever you get up to! :)
