The Axis Theatre in Ballymun is a really lovely venue. Warm, inviting and comfortable you couldn’t ask for a nicer spot to debut as a comedian, assuming you aren’t phased by a big crowd that is! The 4 newbies who took part in Dean Scurry’s workshops and shared what they had learned with the Ballymun crowd were certainly braver than most. Facing a large home crowd who seemed to know them well, each of the four lads (Paddy Mooney, James Dunne, Denis Delaney and Simon Daly) took to the stay confidently and consistently got the audience laughing throughout the show.
Dean Scurry was the master of ceremonies for the evening and he certainly got the crowd pumped and ready to laugh. Clownish and over the top, Dean arrived on stage ‘Gagnam Style’ and from that manic beginning his energy never once faltered. His sense of humour was light-hearted and cheeky and the room erupted with laughter every time he shared another of his hilarious stories. Dean showed an immense enthusiasm for the new acts he was showcasing and it was easy to see how much respect they afforded him.
The night was not without its flaws and some of the workshop graduates have a long way to go before they could call themselves ‘comedians’ in the best sense of the word. However their material was well thought out and I have to give them props for having the courage to stand before a packed auditorium and try to make them laugh. I would have liked to have seen less reliance on obvious ‘body issue’ jokes and more respect for their allocated stage time will be necessary if they want to be remotely successful on the comedy circuit in future. But 2 of the 4 lads showed a confidence and control beyond their limited experience and I was particularly impressed with Simon Daly’s creative set, it’s not often a letter to Mammy gets as many laughs as his example did!
As Mairéad mentioned in her interview with Dean Scurry earlier we’re delighted to be able to give away a pair of tickets for the upcoming gig ‘Make Me Laugh’ gig in The Axis Theatre, Ballymun.
‘Make Me Laugh’ is a gig showcasing a group of local wanna be comedians who have been put through their paces in a series of workshops with comedians Dean Scurry and Aidan Killian.
These comedy newbies will each be delivering five minutes of their finest stand-up on Friday 16th Nov. and all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning a free pair of tickets is tell us where the gig will be taking place! (hint hint the answer is mentioned in the title of this post/in the video still shot!)
E-mail your answers to firstname.lastname@example.org along with your contact details and we will let the lucky winner know who they are after 6pm on Thursday 15th Nov. Alternatively you can spend a little to support Irish comedy & book your tickets on www.axis-ballymun.ie
A quick look at ‘Make Me Laugh’ organiser, Dean Scurry’s, twitter profile shows he is a very busy man
I do stand up comedy, I run workinclassrecords.com, I produce and present Dole TV, I co-produce ‘HipNós’
So we were delighted when he agreed to make time in his schedule to chat to us about the upcoming gig in the Axis Theatre Ballymun!
First of Dean, thanks for chatting to us, you seem to be a multi-tasking master! Make me Laugh is all about showcasing the talents of a group of new comedians whom you have helped learn their craft, did you receive any similar support in the early days of your stand-up comedy career?
Ye from Des bishop, when we made Joy in da hood in Ballymun
That must have been quite an experience, did this encourage you to set up the workshops or was there another source of motivation for taking that plunge?
A bit from the experience with Des, from Aidan Killian, from making Journey of a joke with DCTV and also from axis Ballymun. I also wanted to take things back to backs with the comedy club In Ballymun
Ah yes, I remember the characters you discovered in that set of workshops earlier in 2012 , which was aired on DCTV, why did you choose not to record this in the same way?
Been there done that, also that type of thing costs money to do correctly, this project is also for a different purpose, to get comedy in the club in Ballymun back to basics after 5 years of having all the top acts in the country play there numerous times. We spoilt the locals a bit.
As Dean so clearly explained ‘Make Me Laugh’ is a gig showcasing a group of local wanna be comedians who have been put through their paces in a series of workshops with comedians Dean Scurry and Aidan Killian. These comedy newbies will each be delivering five minutes of their finest stand-up to an audience of friends and family in Axis Theater. But you don’t have to know them to support them in their debut gig! Everyone is welcome to join the fun & support the future of Irish comedy on November 16th in Ballymun
